SC Seeks Acid Attack Data, Harsher Punishments

On January 27, the Supreme Court of India heard a case about acid attacks.

A woman named Shaheen Malik, who was attacked with acid in 2009, asked the court to help victims like her.

The court asked all states and union territories to provide details about acid attack cases, including how many have been filed, how many are pending, and what help the victims are getting.

The court also suggested that the government should think about selling the assets of the people who commit these crimes to pay for the victims' treatment and support.

The court wants to make sure that victims get the best legal help and that the law is changed to include those who are forced to drink acid as disabled.

The court also said that the current compensation of at least Rs 3 lakh is not enough and that the punishment for acid attacks should be very severe to stop these crimes.

Additionally, the court suggested that the law should be changed so that the accused has to prove their innocence, similar to dowry death cases.
