SEBI Gains Authority to Remove Unverified Market Content
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has been given new powers to ask social media platforms to remove any false or misleading information about the stock market.
This includes posts by financial influencers, or 'finfluencers'.
The government has officially recognized SEBI as an authority under the Information Technology rules.
This means that if SEBI finds any wrong information that could harm investors, it can order the platforms to take it down within 36 hours.
This new rule is important because there are many people sharing unverified stock market tips online, and SEBI wants to make sure that investors are protected from bad advice.
SEBI can now direct social media platforms to remove misleading or false securities-related information.
The Finance Ministry notified SEBI as a designated authority under the Information Technology rules.
SEBI must act within 36 hours to remove unlawful content upon being directed.
The move aims to protect investor interests and regulate the securities market.
SEBI's authority covers content concerning investor interests in securities, including misleading financial advice and fraudulent trading schemes.
