India's Battery Energy Storage Capacity Set to Surge 10-Fold in 2026
India is getting ready for a big change in how it stores energy.
Right now, it can store a little bit of energy in batteries, but next year, it will be able to store much more—about 10 times as much!
This is because many projects that were planned are now being built.
Last year, there were a lot of plans made for these projects, and now they are starting to happen.
The big question is whether these projects will work as well as promised and how they will be paid for, especially the ones that cost less to run.
India's battery energy storage capacity is projected to increase from 507 MWh in 2025 to 5 GWh in 2026.
This surge is due to a backlog of projects under execution and record-breaking tendering activity in 2025.
2025 saw 69 tenders totaling 102 GWh, nearly equal to all tenders issued between 2018 and 2024 combined.
The industry is expected to prove itself operationally in 2026 as projects enter the implementation phase.
Financing these projects, especially those with low tariffs, remains a significant challenge.
