Rio Favela Raid Leaves Over 60 Dead in Largest Gang Operation
Police and soldiers in Rio de Janeiro conducted a very large operation against a powerful drug gang called the Red Command in neighborhoods called favelas.
The raid involved helicopters and armored vehicles, and fierce fighting broke out.
Sadly, more than 60 suspected gang members were killed, along with four police officers.
Officials reported arresting at least 80 people.
This operation was described as the largest of its kind in the city's history.
The United Nations Human Rights Office expressed horror at the bloodshed and called for investigations.
Some experts believe these large raids are not effective in the long run because they often target lower-level members who can be easily replaced, and there is a lack of overall strategy in public security.
Approximately 2,500 police and soldiers raided Rio de Janeiro favelas targeting the Red Command drug gang.
The operation resulted in fierce gun battles, leaving over 60 suspect deaths and 4 police officer deaths.
At least 80 suspects were arrested during the raid.
The raid is considered one of the largest police operations of its kind in Rio de Janeiro's history.
