Advanced surgery saves Bangladeshi patient diagnosed with life-threatening condition
A man from Bangladesh was sick with kidney problems for a whole year and could not get better.
He went to a big hospital in Calcutta, where doctors found out why.
His kidney had stopped working, and he also had a giant bulge in the main blood vessel of his belly.
That bulge is called an aneurysm, and it is dangerous because it can burst at any time without warning.
The bulge was also blocking the tube that lets urine leave the kidney.
Doctors performed a special surgery called EVAR, using a tiny mesh tube called a stent graft.
The mesh tube was placed inside the blood vessel to create a new path for blood to flow.
This kept the dangerous bulge out of circulation.
After the surgery, the man's pain went away and he could walk again.
A 54-year-old man from Dhaka, Bangladesh, underwent life-saving surgery at Manipal Hospital Mukundapur in Calcutta after a year of renal complications.
Doctors diagnosed a failed kidney and a giant abdominal aortic aneurysm, with a tear already present in the artery's lining.
The aneurysm obstructed the ureter, preventing urine from reaching the bladder from the kidney and causing renal problems.
A minimally invasive Endovascular Aortic Repair (EVAR) was performed on July 6 using an endovascular graft.
The stent graft created a new blood-flow pathway while excluding the aneurysm sac from circulation, and the patient's pain subsided after follow-up.
