New Buddhist Group Challenges Ladakh's Political Representation
A new group called the Voice of Buddhist Ladakh (VBL) was formed on January 1, 2024.
They say that Buddhists in Ladakh are not being fairly represented in talks with the Indian government.
The VBL wants to have a say in these talks, which are being led by the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA).
The LAB and KDA, however, say that the VBL is trying to cause division among the people of Ladakh.
They believe the VBL is supported by the BJP, a political party, to create problems.
The VBL denies this and says they just want to protect Buddhist interests.
Ladakh is a region with two main parts, Leh and Kargil, which have different political and social goals.
The VBL met with the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh to discuss their concerns.
Voice of Buddhist Ladakh (VBL) formed on January 1, 2024, claiming under-representation of Buddhists in High-Powered Committee (HPC) talks.
Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) dismiss VBL, alleging BJP involvement to divide Ladakh's Buddhists.
VBL met with Ladakh Lieutenant Governor to express concerns before HPC talks expected around January 10.
LAB and KDA accuse VBL of making communal statements and attempting to create division among Buddhists and between Leh and Kargil regions.
VBL convener Skarma Namtak denies BJP ties, stating the group's goal is to safeguard Buddhist interests.
