Senior Citizens Seek Elder-Friendly Voting in Maharashtra
A group of senior citizens in Maharashtra, representing 28 organizations, asked the state's election commission to make voting easier for older people.
They met with the election commissioner and suggested things like putting polling booths on the ground floor, having ramps and wheelchairs, and letting seniors volunteer to help with the elections.
They also wanted special lines for seniors and help for those in old-age homes.
The commissioner said home voting isn't possible, but the group hopes their ideas will make voting better for seniors.
Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Senior Citizens, representing 28 organizations, met with Maharashtra State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare.
JAC requested elder-friendly voting arrangements, including ground-floor polling booths, ramps, lifts, wheelchairs, and priority queues for seniors.
They sought home voting for elderly voters, but the commissioner clarified it's not feasible for civic elections.
JAC submitted eight recommendations for voters aged 60 and above, including digital ID acceptance and support for old-age home residents.
The committee demanded improved booth infrastructure with proper ventilation, lighting, water, clean toilets, first aid, and medical assistance.
