A national chess competition began in Delhi on October 10.

It was opened by Harsh Malhotra, a Union minister.

The competition is part of a larger sports program run by the Bhartiya Shiksha Board.

About 1,000 students from 35 schools in eight states are participating in that program.

The chess event is planned to last two days.

Malhotra said sports can help students learn patience, discipline and decision-making.

School head Lakshya Chhabaria also spoke about chess and its connection to India’s history.

The Board says its activities aim to support students beyond classroom learning.

The larger program’s final phase is scheduled for Hapur.
