India's Insured Bank Deposits Decline as Wealth Grows
Imagine you have money in an Indian bank.
The government insures a portion of your deposits in case the bank fails.
However, the percentage of total deposits insured has decreased.
This is mainly due to a rise in large deposits held by wealthier individuals, outpacing the growth of insured deposits.
While most individual accounts are still insured, a smaller portion of overall bank deposits are protected.
India's deposit insurance coverage is lower than that of developed nations like the US and Japan.
Insurance coverage for bank deposits in India decreased by 9.5 percentage points between September 2020 and March 2025.
The coverage ratio is at a five-year low of 41.5 percent.
The decline is attributed to a rise in high-value deposits.
Almost 98% of bank accounts are insured, but these accounts hold a smaller portion of total deposits.
India's deposit insurance lags behind the US and Japan.
