Trump Administration Plans $850 Million U.N. Dues Payment

The United States owes the United Nations billions of dollars in unpaid dues.

The Trump administration plans to pay $850 million of that debt.

Most of the money would support the U.N.’s regular budget.

Some would help peacekeeping missions in Haiti and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The U.S. still would owe about $5 billion afterward.

In February, the U.S. paid $160 million.

The U.N. had warned that its finances could collapse if countries did not pay.

Some Republicans say the planned payment should come with stronger changes to how the U.N. works.
