Carlsen Grounds Expectations for Gukesh
Magnus Carlsen, a former world chess champion, talked about Gukesh Dommaraju, the youngest world chess champion.
Carlsen said that while Gukesh is very good, it's not guaranteed he will be the greatest of all time.
He thinks Gukesh might just be an elite player who had a great run.
Carlsen also mentioned that Gukesh is under a lot of pressure and made a big mistake in a recent game.
He praised Gukesh's critical thinking, which he believes is better than many younger players because Gukesh's coach didn't let him use computer programs when he was learning.
Carlsen was in Barcelona for an event where he played a blindfold chess game with Hikaru Nakamura.
Magnus Carlsen suggests Gukesh Dommaraju may not become the greatest of all time, but could be an elite player with a notable run.
Gukesh made a significant blunder against Nodirbek Abdusattorov at the Tata Steel Chess tournament in 2026.
Carlsen attributes Gukesh's strong critical thinking to his coach's decision to limit his use of computer programs during his formative years.
The pressure on Gukesh as the youngest world champion has led to unrealistic expectations, partly due to his participation in strong tournaments.
Carlsen was in Barcelona for the International Casinos and Entertainment Expo (ICE Barcelona 2026), where he played a blindfold exhibition game with Hikaru Nakamura.
