ITR-U Filing Now Open: Who Can File and What To Know
The government is letting people fix mistakes on their past tax returns.
If you filed your taxes for 2021-2022 or 2022-2023 and made a mistake, you can now correct it.
You have some time to do this, up to 24 months after the end of the financial year.
The rules changed, allowing for the filing of updated returns up to 48 months from the end of the relevant assessment year.
But you may have to pay extra taxes depending on how late you are when you update.
ITR-U allows taxpayers to correct errors or omissions in previous income tax filings.
The facility is available for assessment years 2021-22 and 2022-23, using ITR-1 and ITR-2.
Taxpayers can file updated returns within 24 months from the end of the assessment year.
The deadline extension allows filing up to 48 months for returns filed in AY 2025-26 and beyond.
Additional tax is payable, the percentage increasing with the delay in filing.
