EU Considers New Associate Membership Proposal for Canada

EU Considers New Associate Membership Proposal for Canada

The European Union is considering a new kind of relationship with Canada.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen suggested calling it associate membership.

This would not make Canada a full member of the EU.

Current EU rules allow full membership only for European countries.

The idea was discussed while Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney visited the European Parliament.

The exact rules for associate membership have not been decided.

Canada and the EU have already strengthened their trade and security cooperation.

This includes a trade agreement, a 2025 security partnership and Canada joining an EU defence programme.
