India's Budget Carrier and Presentation Evolution
A long time ago, the Budget was carried in a leather bag, just like in Britain.
This bag was called the Gladstone Bag.
After India became independent, Finance Ministers used different kinds of briefcases.
In 2019, Nirmala Sitharaman started using a traditional Indian ledger called a bahi khata, wrapped in red cloth.
This was to show that India was moving away from British traditions.
The Budget carrier has changed over time to show India's own identity and modern ways of doing things.
The Budget is presented every year in Parliament, and it's a big event where important decisions about money are made.
This year, the Budget will be presented on a Sunday, which is unusual.
The markets will also be open on that day so people can react to the new rules right away.
The Budget carrier evolved from a leather briefcase to a bahi khata and finally a tablet, reflecting India's political and cultural shifts.
The word 'Budget' originates from the French bougette, meaning a small leather bag for papers.
India inherited the Budget briefcase from British parliamentary tradition, known as the Gladstone Bag.
India allowed each Finance Minister to choose their own Budget carrier, unlike Britain's single inherited briefcase.
In 2019, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced a red cloth-wrapped bahi khata, rejecting colonial symbolism.
