Supreme Court Stays GST Search Ruling on Lawyer’s Office

Supreme Court Stays GST Search Ruling on Lawyer’s Office

India’s Supreme Court temporarily stopped an earlier court decision about a tax investigation at a lawyer’s office.

Tax officials had searched Puneet Batra’s office and taken his computer.

The Delhi High Court had said such a search could happen if there was initial evidence of an offence.

Batra challenged that decision in the Supreme Court.

His lawyers worried that officials might read private information about his clients.

The Supreme Court first paused the examination of the computer’s data.

It then stayed the High Court’s order and issued notice on Batra’s plea.

The Supreme Court will consider the legal challenge further.
