Manipur BJP MLA Susindro Meitei renews threat to quit party
A politician in Manipur, a state in northeastern India, is unhappy with his own political party.
His name is L Susindro Meitei, and he is a leader in the BJP, the party that runs the state government.
He says he might leave the BJP if the government does not take care of the people.
He says voters in his area are so upset that they want him to run as an independent instead of on a BJP ticket.
Meitei used to be a minister, and he thinks the government worked better back then.
Two months ago, in July, he warned that he might quit if things did not improve.
Manipur has had serious fighting between two communities, the Meiteis and the Kukis, since May 2023.
Hundreds of people have died and many families have lost their homes because of that violence.
An election in the state is due next year, and people will soon choose their leaders.
Manipur BJP MLA L Susindro Meitei said on Friday he would be compelled to leave the party if the BJP-led state government does not work in the people's interests.
His renewed warning came weeks after he criticised Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh, saying the government's performance declined after President's Rule was lifted in February.
Meitei, a former consumer affairs, food and public distribution minister under ex-chief minister N Biren Singh, said constituents in Khurai are asking him not to contest on a BJP ticket.
On July 26, he warned he may quit the BJP if the government's functioning continues to be "unsatisfactory".
Manipur has been hit by ethnic violence between valley-based Meiteis and hill-dwelling Kukis since May 2023, leaving at least 260 people dead and thousands homeless.
