Court Orders Idol Smuggler Subash Chandra Kapoor Returned to Germany

Subash Chandra Kapoor was a dealer who sold ancient Indian sculptures.

Investigators said some sculptures were stolen from temples in Tamil Nadu.

India brought him from a German prison in 2012 so he could face a specific case.

He was convicted in 2022 and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Because of time already spent in custody, his sentence ended in 2023.

Indian authorities wanted to prosecute him for other alleged thefts too.

Germany did not give permission for four of those cases.

A court said India must follow the extradition agreement and cannot keep him imprisoned for unapproved charges.

Kapoor is therefore expected to return to Germany, while many of the missing idols remain abroad or untraced.
