BMC School Rebuilding Delayed in Mankhurd
A school in Mankhurd, Mumbai, was torn down in 2021 because it was unsafe.
The city government, BMC, wanted to build a new school but the defence department said no because the new school would be too tall and too close to a defence building.
Now, BMC is making a new plan for a smaller school.
The 450 students who went to the old school now have to go to a school far away, which is not safe for them to travel to every day.
Parents and a local education group are upset and want a simple, low-rise school instead of a tall one.
BMC's proposal to rebuild a school in Mankhurd was rejected by the defence establishment due to proximity to a sensitive area.
The school, which had 450 students, was demolished in 2021 and has not been rebuilt yet.
Students are currently attending classes in Maharashtra Nagar, raising safety concerns due to the need to cross railway tracks and busy roads.
Parents and local education groups prefer a low-rise school building over a multi-storey structure.
BMC is redesigning the plan and will resubmit it to obtain the necessary permissions.
