India’s 2026 Southwest Monsoon Ranks Fourth-Lowest Since 2001

India’s 2026 Southwest Monsoon Ranks Fourth-Lowest Since 2001

India had much less rain than usual during the 2026 summer monsoon season.

Rainfall was only 87% of the long-term average.

This matters because the monsoon provides more than 70% of India’s yearly rain.

Less rain can make it harder for farmers to grow crops and earn money.

Farmers planted less land overall, and rice planting fell compared with last year.

Experts worry that weak rain could also affect winter crops and raise food prices.

The India Meteorological Department expects normal rain in peninsular India from October to December.

However, it expects October rainfall to be below normal across India, while strong El Niño conditions may continue affecting weather patterns.
