Meta Adds Safeguards After Modi Post Removal
Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted a selfie video on Facebook on July 28.
Meta’s system mistakenly removed it because of a glitch in its AI filters.
The post was later restored and Meta apologized.
The Indian government was not satisfied with the explanation and asked Meta to add extra checks.
Meta wrote to the government, saying that any post from the Prime Minister or other important accounts will now be reviewed by at least two senior officials before any action is taken.
A team from Meta will meet with government officials soon to discuss the new safeguards and other content‑moderation issues.
Meta temporarily removed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Facebook post on July 28, citing a technical glitch in AI‑driven content filters.
The post, a selfie video from July 23, was later restored after Meta apologized and explained the error.
The Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) summoned a senior Meta executive and deemed the company’s explanation inadequate.
Meta has written to the government outlining new safeguards: multiple senior‑level reviews and at least two officials must approve any moderation action on prominent accounts.
A delegation from Meta is expected to meet MeitY officials later this week to discuss the safeguards and broader content‑moderation concerns.
