India Expands Metrology Verification with 12 GATC Certificates
The Indian government has given 12 special certificates to 11 private companies.
These certificates allow these companies to check and test weighing and measuring tools, like scales and meters.
This is a big change because before, only government labs could do this.
Now, private companies can help too, which will make things faster and more accurate.
The government hopes this will make sure that when people buy things, they get the right amount and the right quality.
It will also make it easier for businesses to follow the rules.
The new rules cover 18 types of tools used in different areas like healthcare, transport, and energy.
The government also set up an online portal for private companies to apply for these certificates, and the application process was completed by November 30, 2025.
Existing government labs will still work as test centers, so there won't be any disruption in services.
The Department of Consumer Affairs awarded 12 GATC certificates to 11 private entities on December 24, 2025.
This expansion follows amendments to the Legal Metrology (GATC) Rules, 2013, which now cover 18 categories of weighing and measuring instruments.
The initiative aims to improve accuracy and reliability in weights and measures used in trade and consumer transactions.
An online portal was launched to invite applications from eligible private entities, with the process closing on November 30, 2025.
Existing government labs will continue to function as deemed GATCs, ensuring continuity in the verification network.
