Somali Pirates Seek Prison Transfer to Somalia
Forty-four Somali pirates were sentenced to life imprisonment in India for piracy.
They asked the court if they could serve their sentences in Somalia instead because they are having a hard time in Indian prisons.
They said it's difficult because of language barriers, cultural differences, and not having family or friends in India.
The pirates hope that by pleading guilty, they can strengthen their request to be transferred to Somalia.
44 Somali pirates were sentenced to life imprisonment under the Maritime Anti-Piracy Act, 2022.
The pirates requested to serve their sentences in Somalia due to severe hardship in Indian prisons.
They cited language, cultural, and lifestyle differences, as well as lack of family support in India.
The request was made a day after their sentencing in Mumbai.
