Delhi HC Prematurely Releases Two Rape Convicts Serving Life Sentences

In a big courthouse in New Delhi, called the Delhi High Court, a judge made an important decision.

He said that two people who were in prison for very serious crimes could go free early.

One of them, named Ramesh, had been in jail for more than 31 years, even though he was only 19 when he committed the crimes in 1992.

A group called the Sentence Review Board decides who can leave prison early, and it had said no to Ramesh 18 times.

The judge said the board did not do a fair, careful check of his case.

Ramesh behaved very well in jail — he never got into trouble for more than 30 years and worked in the jail's printing shop for over 25 years.

The judge said prison should help people become better, not punish them forever, and he quoted a story by writer Anton Chekhov saying lifelong imprisonment kills a person slowly.

The judge also helped another prisoner named Tasleem, whose release had been turned down four times.

The court said the board's decisions were unfair and broke the law that protects everyone's basic rights.
