Bombay HC Dismisses PIL Over Mumbai University Law Intake Cut
The Bombay High Court said a lawsuit that tried to stop Mumbai University from cutting the number of students in its law schools was not a real public interest case.
The court said the lawyers’ group that filed the lawsuit was not allowed to challenge the university’s decision.
It also told the group to pay a fine of one lakh rupees.
The judges said that problems with law schools should be handled by the Bar Council of India, not the university.
They also pointed out that one of the schools, Rizvi College of Law, had no approved teachers or principal, which made the lawsuit look like it was only about that school.
Bombay High Court dismissed a PIL challenging Mumbai University’s 50% reduction in law college intake for 2026‑27.
Acting Chief Justice Ravindra Ghuge and Justice Gautam Ankhad ruled the petition was not a genuine public interest case.
The court imposed a Rs 1 lakh cost order on the petitioner, Lawyers’ Foundation, to be paid within 30 days.
The bench questioned the maintainability of the petition, noting academic matters fall under the Bar Council of India’s jurisdiction.
The court highlighted concerns over Rizvi College of Law’s lack of approved faculty and principal, suggesting the petition was driven by that college.
