Carrier Visit Brings Economic Hope and Sex-Tourism Risks to Pattaya

A large United States Navy ship is coming to Thailand near the tourist city of Pattaya.

Almost 5,000 sailors and Marines may visit the city while taking a break from a long time at sea.

Local businesses hope the visitors will spend money in hotels, restaurants, and entertainment venues.

Pattaya’s mayor estimated that each person could spend 1,000 to 3,000 baht per day.

The visit could therefore help the city during a slow tourism year.

However, prostitution is illegal in Thailand, even though it is visible in some tourist areas.

Police have increased patrols and detained dozens of people suspected of prostitution.

Experts worry that more customers could increase sexual exploitation and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

The total economic effect will depend on whether sailors stay in Pattaya or travel elsewhere.
