Raj Thackeray Says Democracy Needs Gandhi Beyond Ceremonial Tributes
Raj Thackeray said people should remember Mahatma Gandhi for his ideas, not only with ceremonies and photographs.
He said Gandhi taught citizens that they can question those in power.
Thackeray believes this right is important for democracy today.
He criticised efforts to call people anti-national when they ask difficult questions.
He also warned against social-media propaganda that can weaken independent thinking.
He said peaceful protests and marches help citizens hold governments accountable.
Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray are planning a protest march on October 4.
The march will raise concerns about the Election Commission and its voter-revision process.
Raj Thackeray said Gandhi’s teachings are especially important amid growing intolerance toward public dissent.
He criticised tributes that focus mainly on garlanding statues and taking photographs.
Thackeray said citizens must retain the right to question authority and oppose state overreach peacefully.
