Iran Deploys Cloud Seeding Amid Historic Drought and Water Shortages
Iran is facing a really bad drought, meaning there's not enough water.
It's the driest it's been in many, many years.
To try and get more rain, they are using a special technique called cloud seeding.
This involves flying planes and sprinkling tiny particles into clouds.
These particles help the water droplets in the clouds stick together and become heavy enough to fall as rain.
They started doing this over a dried-up lake called Urmia and plan to do it in other areas too.
The country has had much less rain than usual, and some dams are almost empty.
The president even warned that if it doesn't rain soon, they might have to ration water in the capital city, Tehran, and people might need to move.
Some people are also being asked to use less water, and officials might fine those who use too much.
While it's a serious problem, there was some rain in other parts of the country, and even snow on a ski slope.
Iran has initiated cloud-seeding flights to address severe water shortages and extreme drought.
The first operation targeted the Urmia Lake basin, an area suffering from dramatic water level recession.
Missions are planned to expand to East and West Azerbaijan provinces.
Precipitation levels nationwide have decreased by approximately 89% compared to long-term averages, with the current autumn being the driest in 50 years.
Tehran has experienced its lowest rainfall in about 100 years, leading to concerns about potential rationing and evacuations if sufficient rain does not arrive before winter.
- Who
- Iranian authorities
- What
- Initiated cloud-seeding flights and spraying clouds with chemicals to induce rainfall, while also considering water rationing and penalties for excessive water use.
- When
- Cloud seeding began on Saturday, with further operations planned; rainfall prayers were held on Friday; the drought is described as the worst in decades.
- Where
- Urmia lake basin, East and West Azerbaijan provinces, Iran; dam levels in Tehran, West Azerbaijan, East Azerbaijan, and Markazi are critically low.
- Why
- To combat severe water shortages and extreme drought, characterized by record low rainfall and near-empty reservoirs.
Government Action
Citizen Concerns
Water Scarcity
Government Action
Authorities are actively implementing cloud seeding and considering water rationing and potential evacuations to combat severe drought.
Citizen Concerns
Hundreds gathered in a mosque to pray for rain, indicating public concern and reliance on divine intervention alongside official measures.
Water Consumption
Government Action
Officials plan to penalize excessive water consumption by businesses and households.
Citizen Concerns
There is an implicit need for individual and business cooperation to address the crisis, beyond government mandates.
