Mountbatten's Revelation: Jinnah's Health May Have Avoided Partition
Lord Mountbatten, who was in charge of India when it became independent from Britain, once said that if he had known Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the leader who wanted Pakistan, was very sick, he might not have divided India and Pakistan so quickly.
Jinnah had tuberculosis and was told he might not live much longer.
He kept this a secret because he was afraid his opponents would wait for him to die and then not create Pakistan.
After Jinnah died, Mountbatten thought that if they had waited a few more months, the division might not have happened.
The quick decision led to a lot of problems and fights between people.
It's a big 'what if' in history.
Lord Mountbatten believed that knowing Jinnah's terminal illness could have prevented the Partition of India.
Jinnah hid his tuberculosis diagnosis, fearing political opponents would delay the creation of Pakistan.
Mountbatten expedited the British withdrawal from India, originally planned for 1948, to August 1947.
Jinnah's death in 1948 left a leadership vacuum in Pakistan, highlighting his crucial role.
The rushed Partition led to massive displacement and communal violence in the Indian subcontinent.
