CEA Advocates Dual Engine Financing Model
The Chief Economic Advisor of India, V. Anantha Nageswaran, said that India needs both strong banks and strong debt markets to finance big projects.
Banks will help with short-term loans, while debt markets will handle long-term financing.
He thinks India is in a good position to grow because the economy is stable and banks are strong.
He also said that mid-sized companies and local governments need better access to debt markets.
To make this happen, India needs better rules, more types of loans, and more participation from big investors like pension funds.
He warned that while growing the debt market is important, it must be done carefully to avoid problems.
India needs both a strong banking system and robust debt capital markets for large-scale investments.
Banks will lead in short-term and relationship-driven lending, while debt markets will focus on long-term and large-scale financing.
India's current macroeconomic stability, including high growth and strong banks, is conducive to developing debt markets.
The challenge is to enable mid-sized companies, infrastructure projects, and municipalities to access debt markets affordably.
A world-class debt market requires a credible credit curve, liquidity, diverse instruments, and active participation from institutional investors.
