Scientists Observe Inside Dying Star's Supernova
Imagine a star, like our sun, but much, much bigger.
These giant stars eventually run out of fuel and explode in a big bang called a supernova.
Scientists used special telescopes to look inside one of these exploding stars for the first time.
They saw that the star's outer layers had been stripped away, like peeling an onion, revealing the deeper layers.
This helped scientists confirm what they thought the inside of these dying stars looked like, like layers of different elements.
It's a bit like seeing the core of an apple after you've cut off the peel and some of the flesh, giving us a better understanding of how big stars die.
Scientists observed the insides of a dying star during a supernova for the first time.
The supernova, called 2021yfj, is located in the Milky Way galaxy.
The star's outermost layers of hydrogen and helium had peeled away, as well as the innermost layers of silicon and sulfur.
The finding confirms the layered structure of large stars near the end of their lives.
Scientists are unsure how the star lost its layers.
