Sikkim rolls out AI-based permit system to boost tourism
The government of Sikkim, a beautiful state in India, has made a new computer system to help people visit its famous places.
This system uses artificial intelligence, which is like a very smart computer brain.
It helps visitors get special papers, called permits, to go to places like Nathu La Pass and North Sikkim.
Before, getting a permit could be slow and confusing, but the new system makes it faster and clearer.
Only travel companies that are registered in Sikkim can use the system to give out permits.
This stops people from other places from misusing it.
The system also checks the weather and road conditions to decide which vehicles can travel.
Tourists must pay their tour package money to local helpers before they get their permit.
The government is also building bigger parking lots and new stairways at Nathu La.
It has also made the cleanup and nature fees the same for everyone, so visitors only pay once.
All of this helps make tourism in Sikkim easier and better for everyone.
The Sikkim government unveiled an AI-powered single-window online permit system for tourist destinations such as Nathu La Pass and North Sikkim.
The platform is geofenced within Sikkim, allowing only Sikkim-registered travel agencies to generate permits and prevent misuse from outside the state.
Tourism & Civil Aviation Minister T.T. Bhutia said the system makes permit issuance faster, more transparent and hassle-free while safeguarding local travel operators.
The system includes flexible vehicle regulations based on weather and terrain, plus automated notifications requiring tourists to clear package payments with local operators before permits are issued.
Local conservation and garbage fees have been standardised, and infrastructure upgrades including expanded parking, stairways and escalators are underway at Nathu La.
Commissioner-cum-Secretary Raj Kumar Yadav presented features including permit categories, eligibility criteria, online payments, real-time tracking and updated destination rate charts.
