Trump Rules Out Iran Talks as Hormuz Standoff Widens

The United States and Iran disagree about whether they are still negotiating.

Donald Trump said no talks are happening, while Iranian officials said Iran remains open to dialogue.

The two countries also disagree about whether the Strait of Hormuz is open to ships.

Iran says the waterway will stay closed until the United States lifts its blockade and sanctions and releases frozen money.

The United Arab Emirates stopped trade and financial transactions with Iran after reporting two missiles launched toward nearby maritime areas.

Iran denied launching the missiles and called the UAE’s claims baseless.

A vessel was also reportedly damaged by an unknown projectile near Hormuz.

Fewer ships than usual are using the strait, which carries a large share of global oil and gas.

The uncertainty has kept oil prices high and worried investors about the wider economy.
