Starmer Declines Yunus Meeting Amidst Fund Recovery Push
The current leader of Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus, wanted to meet with the UK's Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, to get help in recovering money that was taken out of Bangladesh by the previous leader.
Starmer said no to the meeting.
Yunus believes the UK has a duty to help get the money back.
This is a tricky situation because a close friend of Starmer has ties to the former leader of Bangladesh.
Bangladesh estimates a large amount of money was taken out of the country.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer declined a meeting with Bangladesh's interim leader, Muhammad Yunus.
Yunus sought UK support to recover billions of dollars allegedly siphoned off by the former regime of Sheikh Hasina.
Yunus stated the UK has a 'moral' responsibility to help recover the misappropriated wealth.
The matter is politically sensitive in the UK due to connections between Starmer's ally, Tulip Siddiq, and Sheikh Hasina.
Bangladeshi authorities estimate $234 billion was illicitly transferred out of the country during Hasina's rule.
