India Passes Bill Protecting Vande Mataram Like Anthem
India’s parliament made a new law that says you can’t insult the national song, Vande Mataram, just like you can’t insult the flag or the anthem.
A member of the Aam Aadmi Party, Sanjay Singh, said the RSS had not flown the flag for 52 years.
The Home Minister, Nityanand Rai, said the law protects India’s national pride.
The bill was passed after a lively debate in the upper house of Parliament.
Rajya Sabha passed the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026, extending legal protection to Vande Mataram.
The amendment makes disrespect toward Vande Mataram punishable under the same framework as the national flag, constitution, and anthem.
AAP MP Sanjay Singh criticized the RSS for not hoisting the tricolour for 52 years during the debate.
Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai defended the bill as a commitment to national consciousness and freedom movement legacy.
The bill was passed after heated exchanges invoking patriotism and the legacy of national symbols.
