Mulugu Forest Shows Resilience One Year After Cyclone
Imagine a really strong windstorm, like a tiny tornado, that blew through the Mulugu forest.
It knocked down a lot of trees, about 50,000!
But, a year later, the forest is bouncing back.
New little plants are growing, and the trees that stayed standing are growing new leaves.
The forest workers are helping by removing weeds that might hurt the new plants, building a fence and watch tower to keep the area safe, and making sure no one takes wood from the fallen trees.
The forest is becoming green again and recovering.
An overland cyclone in 2024 damaged a significant part of the Mulugu forest.
Approximately 50,000 trees were affected by the high-speed winds.
Forest staff salvaged timber and left non-timber species to decompose.
Regeneration of the forest is evident with new growth and sprouting plants.
Fencing and a checkpost are planned to protect the regenerating area.
