US, China Agree to Reduce Tariffs, Ease Trade Tensions
The United States and China, two of the world's biggest economies, have agreed to a deal to ease trade problems.
For months, they had argued about tariffs, especially those related to fentanyl, a dangerous drug.
A US senator, Steve Daines, helped start the talks.
China agreed to stop sending ingredients used to make fentanyl to the US and will buy more American soybeans.
In return, the US will lower some tariffs it had placed on China.
China will also temporarily stop requiring special licenses for rare minerals that are important for making things like cars and defense equipment.
This agreement is seen as a pause in their trade disagreements rather than a permanent fix, and they will likely need to make new deals every year.
The US has agreed to reduce fentanyl-related tariffs on China from 20% to 10%.
In return, China will take actions to cut off the shipment of fentanyl precursors to the US.
China has also agreed to purchase US soybeans and pause export controls on US industries.
A year-long suspension of China's licensing requirements for rare-earth minerals is part of the agreement.
The US will put on hold new rules that would blacklist more Chinese companies.

Fentanyl Tariffs
US Stance
The US administration was initially reluctant to reduce fentanyl-based tariffs, linking them to China's actions on fentanyl precursors.
China Stance
China insisted on the reduction of US fentanyl tariffs as a prerequisite for resuming purchases of soybeans and other agricultural products.
Soybean Purchases
US Stance
The US views China's commitment to buy soybeans as a significant win, with the White House stating purchases will be at market prices, not an arbitrary floor.
China Stance
China's commitment to buy soybeans is contingent on 'market prices,' a phrase seen by some as a potential loophole allowing them to bypass US supplies if not price-competitive, especially with Brazil's upcoming harvest.
Trade Pact Longevity
US Stance
President Trump indicated that the deal will be renegotiated annually but is expected to continue for a long time, "long beyond the year."
China Stance
The agreement is characterized by many as a 'pause in hostilities rather than a lasting truce,' suggesting ongoing negotiations and potential for renewed conflict.
