Protesters Challenge Restrictions After Tigress Release at Buxa

Protesters Challenge Restrictions After Tigress Release at Buxa

A tigress was released at Buxa Tiger Reserve in north Bengal.

Afterward, villagers from Buxa and Jayanti and people who work in tourism began a protest.

They say some forest rules make it harder to repair homes and run tourism activities.

They are especially concerned about bringing in building materials and arranging jungle safaris.

Tourism activities were paused around the release and then kept suspended until October 9.

A local minister had earlier promised to look into the concerns, and protesters resumed their action after saying they had received no further assurance.

A lawmaker said discussions could resolve temporary problems and that people asked to leave the core area would receive compensation and land.

The environment minister said relocation would be voluntary, not forced.

The challenge is to protect tigers while also considering local residents and tourism.
