Trump’s Canada Tariffs Draw Senate Fire Over Trade War
President Donald Trump has added new trade restrictions on products from Canada.
The White House says Canada unfairly targeted important American exports.
Five Democratic senators disagree with the approach.
They say the tariffs could make goods more expensive for families and businesses.
They are especially concerned about farmers, manufacturers, small businesses and construction workers.
The senators also worry Canada may build stronger trade relationships with countries such as China.
Some products will be affected on September 15, and other import bans will start on September 29.
Senator Amy Klobuchar is supporting legislation that would give Congress more control over new tariffs.
Five Democratic senators accused President Donald Trump of worsening a “pointless trade war” with Canada.
The White House said the measures respond to Canada’s tariffs on about $20 billion in US exports.
Some Canadian alcoholic beverages, dairy goods and other products face import bans or 50 per cent tariffs.
The senators warned the tariffs could raise costs for consumers, farmers, manufacturers and small businesses.
Certain changes take effect on September 15, while import bans on other products begin September 29.
