Madras HC sets January 5 deadline for TN SOP on rallies
The Madras High Court has told the Tamil Nadu government to make rules for big political rallies and roadshows by January 5, 2026.
This comes after a big accident during a roadshow in Karur where many people died.
The court wants the government to make sure these events are safe.
The rules will say how to organize these events, like having volunteers and police to help.
If any political party doesn't like the rules, they can go to court about it.
The government has already talked to different political parties to make these rules.
Madras High Court sets January 5, 2026 deadline for Tamil Nadu to notify SOP for regulating massive rallies and roadshows.
Deadline follows a stampede during a roadshow in Karur that claimed 41 lives.
Draft SOP includes 16 conditions, exempting religious gatherings and events with less than 5,000 attendees.
Organizers must have volunteers and police deployment, with CCTV cameras for real-time monitoring.
Political parties can approach the court if they feel aggrieved by the SOP conditions.
