Karnataka Mandates Rural Service for Doctors, Addresses Staffing Shortages
The government in Karnataka passed a new rule to make sure doctors and nurses work in the countryside hospitals, which often don't have enough staff.
This is to make sure everyone in the state has access to medical care.
The rule makes those working for long durations in city hospitals move to rural areas.
Some people don't have to do this, like specialists or those close to retirement.
Also, the government added money in the budget to fund different projects in the state.
Karnataka Legislative Council passed a bill mandating rural service for doctors and medical staff.
The amendment aims to address understaffing in rural hospitals by ensuring doctors serve in these areas.
Exemptions are provided for specialists, those nearing retirement, and parents of young children.
Approximately 5,500 doctors and staff have already been transferred through a counselling process.
The Assembly also saw the presentation of the first supplementary budget for FY 2025-26.
