Francis Clifford Smith, Longest-Serving US Prisoner, Dies at 101

Francis Clifford Smith was sent to prison after being convicted of a 1949 murder in Connecticut.

He said he was innocent and was not at the crime scene.

A court sentenced him to death in 1950.

His execution was delayed eight different times.

One delay followed a witness changing her testimony.

In 1954, his death sentence became life in prison.

He spent more than 69 years behind bars, except for brief periods away.

He was released to an eldercare facility in 2020 and died at age 101.
