Karnataka Congress MLAs Resign Over Cabinet Exclusion
Two Congress lawmakers in Karnataka, Yashavantarayagouda V Patil and Belur Gopalakrishna, quit their seats because they were told they would get a ministerial job but never did.
They resigned just before the state chief minister, D.K. Shivakumar, was about to add 20 new ministers to his team.
Patil said he was promised a post before the 2023 elections and was told it would come after 2.5 years, but the promise was broken.
His supporters protested outside the assembly building.
The party now has to deal with the fallout and keep the government united.
Yashavantarayagouda V Patil and Belur Gopalakrishna resigned from the Karnataka Legislative Assembly on Aug 3, 2024.
Their resignations came just hours before Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar’s cabinet expansion, which will add 20 ministers.
Patil claimed he had been promised a ministerial berth, was told it would be granted after 2.5 years, but the promise was not honored.
The Congress leadership faced criticism for failing to keep the promised cabinet positions, sparking protests from Patil’s supporters outside Vidhana Soudha.
The party now must address internal dissent while presenting a united front as the cabinet expansion proceeds.
