Shah Attacks Congress Over Two-Stanza Vande Mataram Decision

The Congress party decided to sing only the first two parts of Vande Mataram at its own events.

Congress says it is following a decision made by its leaders in 1937.

The party says the first two stanzas praise the motherland and are better suited to gatherings involving people of different beliefs.

It also says later parts contain religious and mythological imagery.

Home Minister Amit Shah strongly disagrees with Congress’s choice.

He says limiting the song was appeasement and helped create conditions that led to Partition.

Shah also says Congress is ignoring a law and government instructions supporting the full song.

Congress says the BJP is turning national symbols into political weapons.

The disagreement is now part of a larger argument about patriotism, history and India’s national identity.
