India Warns Meta: No Safe Harbour for CSAM Violations

Indian officials held discussions with Meta about keeping harmful content off its platforms.

They said child sexual abuse material, or CSAM, is illegal and is not protected by safe-harbour rules when the law is violated.

Officials said Meta has become more careful and is improving its systems to find and remove such material.

Meta’s technical teams also explained how its recommendation and moderation systems work.

The government wants these systems to better understand India’s many languages and cultures.

In July, India questioned Meta about Instagram advertisements allegedly linked to CSAM.

Officials are also studying WhatsApp’s proposed username feature because it could create safety concerns.

They said computer-made content should be clearly labelled so users know whether it is real or synthetic.

The government said its goal is to enforce Indian law, not censor ordinary speech.
