Umar Khalid's Ninth Bail Plea Rejected After Six Years
Umar Khalid was a student leader who helped plan protests that turned violent in Delhi in 2020.
He was arrested and charged under a strict anti‑terror law called the UAPA.
He asked for bail eight times, but every court said no because they believed he was part of a conspiracy.
A smaller case was cleared, but it didn’t change the main charges.
In 2026, the Supreme Court said he was an “architect” of the riots, so he can’t get bail until a year passes or witnesses are examined.
He is now appealing that decision in the Delhi High Court.
The case shows how tough it is to get bail when the law says you must be proven innocent before being released.
Umar Khalid, former JNU student leader, has had eight bail applications denied under the UAPA.
Courts have consistently found a prima facie case of conspiracy and terrorism in the 2020 Delhi riots.
The Delhi High Court and Supreme Court have upheld the UAPA bail bar, labeling Khalid an "architect" of the riots.
A separate smaller case was acquitted, but it did not affect the main conspiracy charges.
Khalid is now appealing the Supreme Court's January 2026 decision that barred him from bail.
