Centre Orders Action for Jenu Kuruba Land Rights in Tiger Reserve
Imagine 52 families who belong to the Jenu Kuruba tribe, have lived in the Nagarahole Tiger Reserve for a long time and want to stay there.
They are asking for the right to live on their ancestors' land, according to a special law.
The government has told Karnataka to help these families with their challenges, so the families don't have to move away.
The families are asking the government to give them the right to stay on their land, but the forest department is worried and does not want them to trespass on the protected areas.
On May 20th, the community will discuss the issue of their land.
The Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs directed Karnataka's tribal welfare department to address the challenges faced by 52 Jenu Kuruba families.
The families reside in Karadikallu Atturu Kolli, a tribal hamlet within Nagarahole Tiger Reserve.
The Jenu Kuruba families returned to their original homes in May, seeking land rights under the Forest Rights Act (FRA).
The forest department previously asked the families to leave, but they are demanding land rights.
A gram sabha will be held on May 20th to decide on the land rights, with the community seeking guidance from their ancestors.
