High Court Acquits Clerk in 21-Year-Old Rs 200 Bribe Case

High Court Acquits Clerk in 21-Year-Old Rs 200 Bribe Case

A man working as a government clerk was accused of taking a Rs 200 bribe.

The accusation involved a loan application to buy buffaloes.

The complainant said the clerk wanted money to give him a dispatch number for the application.

Officials organized a trap and found two Rs 100 notes in the clerk’s pocket.

A trial court convicted the clerk in 2005 and sentenced him to two years in prison.

The clerk appealed that decision.

The High Court said finding the money was not enough if the demand for it was uncertain.

It also said the complainant might have had a grudge because the clerk had taken part in recovering loans from people related to him.

The High Court therefore overturned the conviction and acquitted the clerk.
