US-Canada Trade Talks Collapse as Tariffs Trigger Retaliation

The United States and Canada were trying to make a new trade agreement.

Their talks lasted almost two weeks but ended without a deal.

The United States then imposed, or prepared to impose, a 50% tax on some goods from Canada.

Reports describe the affected trade as about US$20 billion or C$28 billion.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stopped the talks and sent Canada’s negotiators home.

He said Canada would charge the United States matching taxes on its goods.

Canada said the final American proposals were unfair and could hurt its economy.

The United States said Canada had turned away from terms that were already mostly agreed.

The disagreement could make trade between the two countries more difficult.
