Choosing the Right ITR Form for 2026-27
In India, people have to file a tax form called an ITR.
Which form you use depends on all the money you earn, not just your salary.
If you only have a salary and maybe two houses, you can use ITR-1.
If you have extra money from selling property, trading, or running a small business, you need ITR-2, ITR-3, or ITR-4.
The rules also say you can only use ITR-1 if your total income is less than 50 lakh rupees.
Using the wrong form can cause problems, so you must check all your income before filing.
ITR form choice depends on all income sources, not just salary.
ITR-1 is for residents with up to ₹50 lakh income, salary/pension, up to two house properties, and limited other income.
Business, professional, or trading income requires ITR-3 or ITR-4 under presumptive schemes.
Capital gains other than eligible long‑term gains need ITR-2.
Using the wrong ITR form can lead to notices, delays, or the need for revised filings.
