₹2000 Banknotes: Legal Tender Status and Unreturned Currency
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) decided to stop using the ₹2000 note, like when they stopped printing it.
While it's still technically legal tender, it's not accepted for transactions in practice.
Banks stopped giving them out in May 2023, and people could exchange them until October 2023.
Most notes were returned, but around ₹6,000 crore worth of notes are still missing.
Some argue this could be a financial gain for the government, as it could potentially lead to a reduction in the RBI's currency liability.
The RBI announced the withdrawal of ₹2000 banknotes in May 2023, under the ‘clean note policy’.
Banks were instructed to stop issuing the notes immediately.
An exchange process was established, with a deadline of October 7, 2023.
Around 98% of ₹2000 notes have been returned.
Approximately ₹6,000 crore worth of ₹2000 notes remain unreturned.
